about

The remaining songs from an old project I've decided to scrap. Rather than just let these disappear forever on my hard drive I figured I'd just release them. Some of these are among my favorite songs I've ever written.

Almost all of these were written in the winter of 2018/2019 after I had moved to Salt Lake City for a graduate school program. I had been experiencing a large amount of writers block after working on the Divine Right EP with Funeral Garden and was struggling to find what I wanted to do next. As these songs eventually began to take shape, life began moving in different directions and it all got pushed to the side. Revisiting these songs later, it felt both insincere and impractical to try to finish or change any of them.

I had written the first song Fallen Trees after a record snowstorm hit my neighborhood and took out a large number of tree branches. Walking around in the strange delicate snowy aftermath was something I wanted to put into sound. That helped create the types of sounds I wanted to explore more, light piano that often loops and loses tempo, minimal synths/sin waves, and sharp punctuating percussion that contrasted some of the acoustic or natural elements. I wanted these songs to explore how I felt at the time, trying to find meaning in things as I found myself getting older and moving from what felt like one phase of my life to the next.

This was originally intended to be a 8-10 song album with longer track times than what appear here. Some of these are nearly finished while others are a little rougher. Several other demos were written for the album but were rough enough that I chose to keep them unreleased. The song titles, album art, and concept are all as they were originally intended.
